I'm a wedding, elopement, and engagement photographer specializing in storytelling and true to life photography!
I’m a fall girly through and through, even more so now that I live in Phoenix. I literally dream of fall days. The chilly weather, cozy sweaters, pumpkin everything, and all the cute clothes. I look my best in the fall due to my obsession with sweaters! So of course I have to share some of my favorite fall photo outfit ideas.
When it comes to taking engagement or family photos, I personally think fall is the perfect time to book your session! No matter the season, the same age old question always comes to mind, “what do I wear?!”
Here are some tips and ideas for planning your fall photo outfits!
Location is a huge factor when it comes to planning outfits! If you’re not familiar with the location of where your photos will take place, ask your photographer for colors they would recommend you wearing. There are so many places I have shot at numerous times, and I now know what colors look best in those locations. The best advice I can give when it comes to location and outfit planning is, find complimenting colors to the scenery.
If you’re taking photos in the desert, avoid wearing colors that blend into the background. You will hear me say this on repeat, but neutrals are ALWAYS a good idea! If you’re taking photos next to the ocean, navy and other shades of blue, creams, tans, and soft tones look the best.
After securing your session, the first thing I recommend doing is looking for outfit inspiration. I have created a style guide for my clients with all the best tips to help them nail their outfits! Alongside the style guide I send out, I also sent them links to Pinterest boards I have curated with outfit inspiration. Below are a few different Pinterest boards I put together specifically for fall outfits!
For fall photos outfit ideas, you can find tons of inspiration here! If you’re looking specifically for fall outfit ideas for women, I have put this board together. And styling your man can sometimes be difficult, so I put this board with men’s fall outfit inspiration together!
I love online shopping! I’m guilty of placing late night orders and forgetting I ordered them, so when they arrive it feels like Christmas haha! Online shopping is great, especially if you don’t have a lot of time to go shopping in person. If you’re going to do this, I highly recommend placing a large order and buying anything that sparks your interest so that you have variety to choose from. You can always return the things that didn’t work out!
If you have time to go to the mall or your favorite store, I strongly suggest you do that! Even better if you go with your partner so that you can coordinate your outfits in person! I like to do this with my husband and son before we take photos, this way I eliminate the guessing game if something will look good next to each other. I also cut out having to make returns to tons of different stores!
Here’s what I would look for when shopping for fall photo outfit ideas!
No matter the season, accessories are always a good idea especially for photos! This adds variety and can dress up an outfit and tie the whole look together. Hats are super popular, especially during the fall. Gigi and Pip, Lack of Color, Urban Outfitters, and Free People are my go-to recommendations for the cutest hats! Layering necklaces, and ring stacks are also a favorite of mine! They’re easy to throw on, dainty, and can elevate a simple look.
Before the day of your photoshoot, TRY EVERYTHING ON! This is so important. You want to make sure that standing next to each other everything looks cohesive and complimentary. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve received the text from clients saying, “we’re running a little behind, we’re having issues with outfits!”
It happens. It’s happened to me! But to eliminate stress and make sure this doesn’t happen as you’re walking out the door, try everything on and make sure it looks good (and fits) before you’re leaving for your shoot!
