I'm a wedding, elopement, and engagement photographer specializing in storytelling and true to life photography!
I’ve been pregnant so I know the struggles of “dressing the bump”. I don’t know about you but when I was pregnant it felt like everything was so generic and looked the same. When it came to my maternity session I didn’t want to wear the same thing that I had seen over and over again, I still wanted to feel like myself with my own individual style! After helping many mamas, I have compiled a list of places to shop and ideas for what to wear and help find outfits for your maternity session!
The first thing I suggest is hopping on Pinterest! My advice is to make a board or screenshot different outfits that inspire you or feel like your style. Here is my board with maternity outfit ideas! After you’ve gathered some ideas and found some things you like narrow it down or find a common theme among the pins. Did you find images with mostly dresses, or are you more into the casual vibe? Are you thinking about using some props? If so, will they effect your inspiration?
Once you figure out the “vibe” you’re going for, time to figure out the colors. Now my number one recommendation over and over again is going to be pick a neutral color palette. It ALWAYS looks good! But if you’re into color, go with color. Just don’t go crazy with the color because it can sometimes be distracting. The Arizona desert has a gorgeous color palette already so you’re going to want to make sure you pick something that doesn’t clash, if you’re taking your photos in the desert. Some good options for picking outfits with color would be blues and creams, burnt orange and brown, or black and cream.
This can be a little tricky too, so here’s what the best practice is when it comes to shopping. I’m a big online shopper, but unless you know for sure how the item is going to fit don’t shop online. Or if you’re going to shop online order weeks in advance and order several options! When you hit the stores you’re going to go with your hair fixed, you’re going to make sure you’re shopping on a day when you’re in a shopping mood and feeling good.
We all know how much it sucks to shop when you’re not in the mood and you’re not feeling yourself! So take your “outfits for your maternity session” inspiration along with you to the store and go with a positive attitude. When I was pregnant I felt like a whale, I didn’t feel cute majority of the time and shopping could be draining. So use this time to celebrate how amazing your body is, do things that make you feel good, brush your hair, get yourself a Starbucks, and enjoy treating yourself!
Start with the lady’s outfit first, this can sometimes be the hardest part because us women can be a little harder to shop for (let’s be real a lot of us are picky, or it can be harder to find things we feel confident in, especially when you are going to be wearing these outfits for your photos).
Once you have everyone’s outfits for your photos picked out, try them on all together. Stand together in front of a mirror and make sure that nothing clashes or looks distracting. If there’s something that doesn’t fit right, exchange it don’t think “I’ll just suck in” or “we can Photoshop this”. Not feeling 100% confident in what you’re wearing, don’t wear it! If anyone is unhappy with their outfit, it is going to show in the photos!
I personally love getting texts asking if I think the chosen outfits look good together. I take photos for a living and have lots of experience with how colors, patterns, textures, and silhouettes photograph! If you’re unsure about something just reach out to your photographer and ask, I promise we don’t mind helping!
I love helping with outfit ideas and inspiration, if you haven’t checked out my Pinterest board with all kinds of outfit inspiration, you can find that here!
